Spring Allergy Myth vs Fact

Think you know your seasonal allergies? Think again.

Every spring, the same myths make the rounds, and they keep people suffering longer than they need to!

Ready to test your knowledge and maybe learn something new along the way? Check out Spring Allergy Myth vs Fact!

Myth #1: It’s just a bad cold.

Fact: If symptoms last longer than 10 days, recur seasonally, or include itchy eyes and sneezing without fever, it’s likely allergies, not infection. Allergies are immune responses, not viral illnesses.

Myth #2: You should wait until symptoms get bad to start treatment.

Fact: Starting prevention before pollen counts peak is often more effective.
In many cases, beginning nasal steroids or antihistamines 1–2 weeks before high pollen season reduces severity. (link to February article)

Myth #3: Local honey cures seasonal allergies.

Fact: There’s no strong scientific evidence that local honey prevents pollen allergies.
The pollen in honey is typically not the same type triggering your symptoms because it is gathered from plants without airborne pollen (that’s why those plants require bees for cross-pollination). It’s delicious, but not an allergy cure.

Myth #4: If I move to another state, my allergies will disappear.

Fact: Allergies can shift over time.
You may trade cedar for ragweed, but the immune system pattern often remains. It may take a year or two to become sensitized to local pollens, but your allergies will probably return and may be worse depending on pollen burden (link to fall article)

Myth #5: A steroid shot at the start of the season is all I need to get through it.

Steroid shots are like using a hammer when you need tweezers, it’s a powerful drug with significant side effects that is not addressing the underlying allergic sensitivity. It can cause more harm than good, often resulting in rebound worsening symptoms when they wear off. Steriod shots can cause sleep disturbance, bone changes, and glucose metabolism issues.

Myth #6: All allergy symptoms are harmless.

Fact: Untreated allergies can worsen asthma, disrupt sleep, affect concentration, and reduce quality of life. Addressing root causes matters.

At Holistic Allergy & Immunology, we look beyond symptom suppression. We evaluate immune balance, gut health, inflammation, environmental triggers, and stress because seasonal allergies are often a sign of deeper immune dysregulation.
